Results
B.C. Team members Pam Ross of Courtenay
Shito-Ryu, took first place in the female black belt kumite (fighting)
competition at the recent sixth annual Victoria Invitational Karate
Tournament held in Victoria.
She defeated U.S. National Team member Dana Exum of Everett, WA., who
took second. Nicole Tippenhauer of Campbell River Shito-Ryu came in
third.
Exum took gold in the female black belt over-18 kata (forms) division
while Ross took silver and Rosella Ng of Vancouver Shito-Ryu won bronze.
Another B.C. Team member, Nigel Nikolaisen of Campbell River Shito-Ryu,
took first place in the men‚s black belt kata. He also placed third in
kumite.
In the open weight female black belt division, Dawn Lasher of Northwest
Karate-do in Everett WA., took gold while Exum took silver and Ng,
bronze.
Exum also took gold in the female over-13 red/black kata division while
Cindy Jacob of Burnaby Renshikan took silver and Dana Lambert of the
Fernando Correia School of Karate in Duncan took bronze.
Chris Ward of Taneda Karate School in Kelowna (Victoria Chito Ryu) took
silver in both men‚s black belt kata and kumite.
Curtis Gerlinger of the University of B.C. Shito-Ryu Seiko Kai took
bronze in kata and gold in kumite.
Gerlinger also took gold in the male black belt open weight kumite
competition while Ward took silver. Kit Mellet of Campbell River
Shito-Ryu took bronze.
Burnaby Renshikan with Matt Bickel, Cindy Jacob and Andrea Maikawa are
the grand champions in the team kata Youth Mixed 17 & under
division. Placing second was Courtenay Shito-Ryu #1 with Lawrence Jr.
Teichrib, Ben Scheltgen and Nathan Bellmore; and third, Courtenay
Shito-Ryu #2 with Nichealla Keath, Melissa Utchfield and Adrianna
Frutti.
Other team kata winners were: Team kata Adult Female 18 & over: 1.
Brentwood Bay Shukokai: Viola Vande Ruyt, Becky Naylor and Karen
Naylor; 2. Courtenay Shito-Ryu #6: Janet Utchfield, Sherry Duncan and
Tracey Tremblett.

More than 210 competitors from Canada and Washington State took part in
the tournament sponsored by CASK Shiai of Victoria and the Wado Karate
Association of Canada whose headquarters are in Victoria.

The Association
The Wado Karate Association of Canada is a
non-profit, federallyincorporated association founded in February,
1996, with the blessing of the late Saiko Shihan Masaru Shintani.
Our purpose is to teach Wado karate as
taught by founder Grand Master Hironori Otsuka, promote physical
well-being and fitness and work towards the advancement of karate
together with other karate groups throughout the world.
We are an independent association and not
part of any other Wado organization.
It is our intention to have harmonious
relations with all karate organizations.
